  1. Support of SMB 3.X (multi-pathing, Hyper-V compatibility, ...)

This feature will position QNAP into the next wave of modern file sharing services. For Small and Medium Enterprises using Virtualization and where investing into a high end SAN is not an option, QNAP is already positioned in this segment but to keep the pace, QNAP should support the latest version of modern file sharing protocols like SMB. I can see several options there.
    - Contribute and/or collaborate this the great work in progress of Samba team.
    - Bring compatibility to install and support Windows Server 2012 both (full and storage edition) on x86/x64 QNAP Boxes(bare metal install and/or in…

      • 2-step or 2-factor authentication

This would be a nice feature to have for administering the NAS over the Internet that adds an additional layer of security against brute force attacks to maliciously gain access to your NAS and the data it stores. The feature is imperative in this day and age, which is evident by the majority of corporations and financial institutions using 2-factor authentication in some capacity whether it is to securely access bank account information or to authentication a client based VPN connection. This functionality already exists in a competitor's firmware utilizing Google authenticator as the application to generate the software token…

        • Ability to resize volume within a storage pool

With thin provisioning volumes within a storage pool now are able to be over allocated. So it shouldn't be a problem to change the size of the volume after creating it, if there is free space e.g. To reduce the size of the volume to clear up space in the storage pool.

          • Full and native support of NUT (UPS Management)

The current QNAP UPS support rely on a customized NUT implementation performed by QNAP that is a real bottleneck.

I looks like QNAP does not use upsmon, but a derivative and obscure version called upsutil. This introduce great limitations as:

We expect to have a native support of the latest version of NUT with a decent GUI and be able to use QNAP as a NUT Master or a real NUT Slave will all the options/and drivers supported by NUT

                • Adding automatic shutdown on UPS battery low

The current implementation of QNAP UPS support provide a way to shutdown QNAP automaticaly after X minutes.

In IT server management, there is a common practice to configure UPS to do a load off/load on cycle UPS of protected devices to be sure that they will see the current drop and restart themselves (if configured to do so)

I would like to see an option in QNAP firmware to be also able to add another criteria for launching QNAP shutdown. This optional criteria would be to automatically launch shutdown on LOW BATTERY status from the UPS

                  By the way event…

                      • Add the PostGIS-extension for PostgreSQL

I would much appreaciate, when people from QNAP could add the PostGIS extension to the PostgreSQL server. Because PostgreSQL server is the most important server for spatial geodata, it would be a great step Forward for the QNAP NAS to use it for geographic data, e.g. Openstreetmap server.

                        • Support of NFS 4.1 session trunking

Most QNAP boxes have two Ethernet interfaces, in visualization scenarios LACP and other existing team bonding does not provide an optimal throughput. By supporting NFS 4.1 session trunking, QNAP boxes with offer both performance and failover over classic Ethernet ports.

On a NAS, users can store many type of files. Among them there is a special class of files that could be called container because they contain internally a set of sub files and folders like a file system. We can identify two type of container files, those used to create archive like .zip, .rar, .7z,.. and those corresponding to disk images like .VHD, .VHDX, .VMDK, .RAW, .CQOW, VDI, ... Being able to access files and folders contained within container files in Read/Write directly via File Station would be very useful. QEMU project already contains a partial solution. Creating a…

                                      • Domain users ability to login to photo station, video station etc

Domain users can not login to multimedia station. It would be a nice feature to add

                                        • spindown external esata (and usb) drives

I use 2 external esata drives as backup devices for my raid1 configured 2 bay 259+. I noticed that the esata drives never spindown. To my opinion there should be a posibility, because a weekly backup does not require 7*24 access and spinup delay for a backup ... is acceptable for me.
Can we have this in a future firmware? There are already some topics in the forum regarding this isuue, but I'll prefer a supported and via GUI operated function.
